Statistics says people are living longer these days. The 60th birthday of a man was a very big event since there were less men who had lived until those ages. But nowadays, the sixties are considered kind of young because there are a lot of people older than sixties. Now, let's find out what makes people live longer. First, I guess that improvement of life environment like nutrition and hygiene is the key factor of longevity. About 70 years ago, many Korean people died in his/her early ages because of hunger and someone who survived were very sick and weak, though. But the development of agricultural technologies has increased the supply of food a lot. No one died of hunger these days. The level of personal hygiene has upgraded too. Every buildings has toilets. We don't drink water from creeks anymore. We have less worms and germs which can infect serious disease around us. Second, the development of medical technologies has been important role for longevity. There are few incurable disease these days, while many kings of chosun dynasty died of mild cough or abscess. New medicines and surgery techniques that can cure lots of illness have been invented everyday. For example, some patients has lived more than 5 years since he was diagnosed a cancer on his lung. Third, I think stabilization of society also could make people live longer. When a war broke out, many people including soldiers and civilians were killed. Think about Korean war and Vietnam war. But there has been no great war during last a couple of decades, people don't have to be killed. God has blessed our generation. We have lived the longest in human history due to causes that I mentioned. Now it's time not to try to live longer, but to try to do something worthy while you are living. |
