In the reading passage, there is ample support for the author’s claim that Genetically modified(GM) crops give people many advantages. However, the professor in the lecture gives several reasons as a rebuttal to the author’s point. First, the professor contends that solving hunger problems by using GM crops is not realistic. The amount of food is already enough and the problem is that foods are unequally distributed. Therefore, even if the more modified crops are yielded, the starvation problem cannot be solved. This casts doubt on the reading passage’s claim that GM crops will be helpful for the poor. Next, the professor insists that genetically modified organisms will increase the prices of provision. For inventing GM crops, companies should spend a large number of money. Their purpose of the investment is not for charity but for getting profits. Therefore, the GM seeds are still sold in 5 times more prices than unmodified seeds. Moreover, the modified crops need a greater quantity of water to grow than unmodified ones do. Thus, the costs of water and seeds will be skyrocketed because of the modified crops in genetic ways, which will be connected to the prices of foods. This counters the reading passage’s assertion that GM crops relieve the status of food prices. Finally, the professor argues that edible vaccines have the same difficulties with original vaccines. The major fruits which are used for vaccines are mainly modified bananas and tomatoes. However, they are spoiled soon in warm climates. Therefore, when moving and storing them, they need to be in the cool condition continuously. This hardship of transportation and storage is the same problem that the original vaccines have had. This refutes the reading passage’s suggestion that the vaccines which are made from GM crops can be distributed wider easily.
