▶ Your Answer :
According to the reading passage, "employees usually work five days a week for eight hours", and they want to work a four0day week. The author in the reading passage said that a four-day workweek policy has a lot of positive effects on the economy. However, the professor in the lecture gives several reasons as a rebuttal to the author's point.
First of all, the professor contends that it is hard for the policy to help companies increase their profit. In the reading passage, "employees would feel more rested and alert, and as a result, they would make fewer costly errors in their work". However, if the policy is enacted, companies have to hire more people, and the companies should train and give medical profit to them. Also, companies have to make more space and computers for people. This casts doubt on the reading passage's claim that companies can increase their income because of decreases in errors from employees.
Second, the professor argues that the policy is not helpful for reducing unemployment problems. According to the passage, employees work 40hours (five days) per week. Also, companies do not want to hire more people since it is more costly, so, companies will require employees to work 10 hours a day. This counters the reading passage's claim that policy aids unemployment problems diminish since companies have to hire people fo working in empty times.
Finally, the professor insists that the policy is risky to employees, not be better. The reading passage said that if they work four days a week, they can spend more time on improving the quality of their life. However, the policy makes them be fired from companies since the companies prefer to hire people who work five days a week. Also, because their income will be decreased, they have to get more jobs. This refutes the reading passage's claim that four days of workweek policy is good for individual employees since they can have more free time.
