▶ Your Answer :
In the reading passage, there is ample
support for the author’s claim that climate change, which could lead to
horrifying environmental crises, is influenced by some factors he suggests.
However, the professor in the lecture gives several reasons as a rebuttal to
the author’s point. He believes that, in fact, the suggested reasons in the
reading passage are groundless.
First, the professor contends that methane
can not be the reason for global warming. It composes of less than 9 percent of greenhouse gas and even less than 1 percent of the atmosphere. Since it takes up a very
small part of them, it can not prominently affect global warming. This casts
doubt on the reading passage’s claim that methane that is emitted from
landfills because of many rotten wastes buried is one of the dominant reasons for
climate change.
Next, the professor insists that removing a
lot of trees for the purpose of producing things like furniture actually slows down
climate change. Trees decay and emit carbon dioxide as they die. It is absorbed
again into the atmosphere with the passage of time. However, as people harvest
trees and utilize them, carbon dioxide can be stored in those products that
people make with trees. As a result, less dioxide will be emitted into the atmosphere.
This counters the reading passage’s assertion that deforestation in a specific
area ignites global warming.
Finally, the professor argues that the
current rise of temperature has nothing to do with a natural cycle. The temperature varied a lot depending on the region during the Medieval Warm Period. For instance, the
northern hemisphere was warmer but the southern one was cooler. In addition,
the overall average temperature was lower than now. It means the current
temperature change is being affected by other factors. This refutes the reading
passage’s suggestion that global warming going on now has a relation to the
trend of climate change events that have happened. (시제에 대해서 고민해볼 필요가 있을 것 같습니다. 단순히 happened인지 현재완료인지 아니면 진행형을 써서 happening으로 갈 것인지요. 본문을 참고해주시면 더 쉬울 것 같습니다.) |
