There would be no student who loves talking exams and getting grades, since they are very stressful and annoying. However, providing students with grades promotes and encourages students to learn. As a result, it is salient and essential for students.
First, grades can stimulate students to learn more and study harder. Students feel a sense of accomplishment when they get good grades. To be specific, students get very excited when they get an A score in an exam after putting a lot of effort into preparing the exam. Thus, they never forget that feeling and try even harder to feel it again next time. For me, I got an A score at the first mid-term math exam in the high school. I was so surprised and happy that I tried even harder to get a better grade next time and I got an A+ score at the final math exam.
On top of that, students can know their status of knowledge and evaluate themselves objectively with their grades. It helps students to plan their learning, because students recognize their weak points after getting grades. For example, when I first took the toefl test, my scores in the speaking and writing sections were quite low. Based on my first toefl score, I acknowledged my weak points and concentrated much more on practicing writing and speaking. As a result, I could get better scores in the speaking and writing sections at the second toefl test.
Lastly, students can learn more through competitions on getting better grades. If there is no grade system, there would be no trigger for students to study. For my experience, when I took exams at the school, I tried really hard to get a better grade than my peers. In contrast, outside the school I never tried to learn anything at all since there were no grades and exams.
To sum up, it is of great important for students to get graded. Students would be annoyed when they prepare exams, and might get hurt and sad when they get bad grades. However, after enduring those hard time, students will learn more and grow up greatly in the long run. |
