▶ Your Answer : There are some debates on whether getting grades on a test is helpful for students to promote learning. Some people think that student can be discouraged by their grades they receive. Of course, it seems to depend on each student's circumstance. However, in my opinion, I firmly believe that grading system is an imperative part of motivating themselves to get a good score. This is because grades serve as an external stimulus and indicator which demonstrate where to be corrected. To begin with, if student got an excellent grade on her or his test, they would be more likely to try harder next time due to their grades as an positive impetus. People are prone to be affected by their repercussion about what they did. Therefore, for student, grades which are handed in a school or academic institution may be able to the only result showing how much they study or are good at learning in their place. For instance, several years ago, I saw a research about people's behavior related to their grades. Some psychologist conducted a test about if grades can affect people's attitude toward their learning process. In fact, subjects in this experiment did not show any improvement on their test before getting grades. But, after they had known their grades, they thought that they should have made more effort. As a result, all of them did well on the exam than before. On top of that, it is clear that when students realize their shortcoming recorded in grades, they can correct them and never make a mistake again. Many students have concerned about why their academic performance do not advance. The more weakness they know, the easier they enhance their ability to study. For instance, when I was a high school student, I was really lost in the situation that my communication skill in English was really bad for a while. After the midterm in that semester, I got a grade including very specific details of my grammar mistakes when speaking English. Thanks to this report card I could complement my vacant side in my English and then, it made me become a fluent speaker in English. To sum up, grades provide student with outside incentive and give some opportunities to deal with their errors they often make. Students have to encourage themselves to be a better learner and then, those two reasons, as reviewed above, appear to fit in them. In this regard, I maintain that it is necessary to award grades to students so that they are motivated to learn. |
