Rather than help children with their schoolwork, parents should encourage their children do their work independently.
Since kids seem to struggle with their homeworks, there are some parents who help their children out. They think that it’s better for the children when they help them with their schoolwork. However, in my opinion, they should encourage their kids to handle their work independently. I feel this way for two reasons, which I will explore in the subsequent paragraphs.
To begin with, the children can learn more by doing homework alone. The purpose of homework is to make kids practice materials that are taught in school. However, when parents aid kids, then it will be parents who would be studying, not the kids. Therefore, in order to learn effectively through schoolwork, children should be do it by themselves. For example, when I was in second grade, I had worksheets about multiplication as a homework. I wasn’t familar with the concept, so I asked my mom for help. She became to practically do the homework by herself, so I had no opportunity to practice multiplication. Thus, I couldn’t catch up with others in class, because I was still bad at math.
On top of that, students will learn how to act independently. It is important for kids to do so for the reason that the parents would not always be there for kids. Kids will learn to be independent by practicing how to solve complex problems on their own. This goes for not only schoolwork, but also other obstacles they might face as they are growing up. On the contrary, if you start to help your children with their homework, then they would start to rely on you. For example, my cousin’s parents never helped her with schoolworks. So, she learned how to handle homeworks alone by looking up online or utilizing dictionaries. Through these experiences, my cousin could learn how to be independent and solve problems without anyone’s help. Consequently, she could get her job and applied for an university all by herself using past experiences.
To sum up, children are able to get learning opportunity, and know how to be independent by doing their schoolworks on their own. In this regard, I believe that parents should not help their children’s homework. What may seem like reducing the child’s burden can actually be harmful to them, so it is of a great importance to know what is the best approach when educating the child.
