The lecturer argues three hypotheses made by reading are insufficient to explain sudden collapse of Angkor. This refutes to the reading passage's point that Angkor's demise happened because of these hypotheses.
First of all, the lecturer argues that Black Death was mainly spread by ship. Therefore, it is highly unlikely for Angkor, an inland area, to experience major outbreak of Black Death. It is also suspicious that Black Death even reached southeast Asia. This contends the reading passage's claim that Angkor disappeared suddenly due to deadly disease, Black Death.
Secondly, the lecturer maintains that water way was not crucial for Angkor. In fact, irrigation system provided unlimited supply of water. Moreover, even if the water was in a shortage, there was definitely some other resources to make up the shortage. On the other hand, the reading passage claims that the failed water system led to lack of rice, which is the reason for Angkor's population to decrease drastically.
Finally, according to the lecture, the rise of maritime trade cannot be the reason for Angkor's fall, because Angkor's economy was mostly based on trade of agricultural products. Since they traded luxurious items like pottery and mirror apart from agricultural products, the economy should have not been affected much even though maritime trade became economically powerful. This contradicts to the reading passage's argument that Angkor experienced sudden collapse since maritime trade started to become a major economic power.
