Younger
generations are often unfairly labeled by some people as selfish and spoiled.
However, in my opinion, it is a baseless stereotype. Young people today are
more inclined to dedicate their time to their communities, as there
is a mounting number of community service programs, and our society values
volunteering experience more than ever.
To begin with, the
booming of startups and projects that are aimed to serve the community proves
its popularity among young people. Since the environmental awareness and the
will to improve social equality raises, younger citizens are making innovative
and passionate movements to devote to our community. For example, the mobile
phone application Forest. It is set up by a group of university graduates, in
order to help people stay focused by reducing screen time. By doing so, the
users will accumulate virtual coins that, in the end, can the used to donate
trees that will be planted in Africa. This application is now one of the most
popular tools among youths, and around 10 million trees are planted thanks to
the creativity and participation of youths.
On top of that,
experience as a volunteer is highly regarded in today‘s society. Companies and
universities prefer people who are willing to contribute to their communities. The
social incentives given to the dedicators are much higher than before. For
instance, my friend Jenny was not quite an expert in her field of study, but
she loves to devote her time and energy to visit local orphanages and hold
various activities that those children will otherwise never have enjoyed.
Thanks to her altruistic devotion, a lot of orphans were able to explore the
world like others. Thus, she was recognized and invited from a prestigious
university to become an assistant professor to help plan and organize
charitable activities for children.
To conclude, the surging number of dynamic
social welfare organizations and the increasing social value of serving the
communities indicate that younger citizens are spending more time and energy to
contribute to their communities.
