People can see a variety of old buildings even they are in the middle of the capital or big cities. Some people might think that it is better to destroy these old buildings and construct new buildings. However, I think it is better to preserve concerning the fact that old buildings can increase cities’ tourism revenue, and if new buildings are constructed, these would be an eyesore. To begin with, cities can earn a lot of profits by utilizing old buildings, and this method brings more revenue to compare to construct a new one. Cities not only save the budget which is spent to build but also tourists can give a lot of profits to cities. For example, Xinjiang where China’s small town located west part of the country, have a lot of old historical building which built more than 1000 years ago. They considered constructing new buildings after a break down all of these old buildings. Since they never did marketings, only a few people visited this town and the city want to make a profit by selling real assets. However, a lot of locals against cities’ plans, so the city’s council had to invest money to promote the city's old buildings as a second plan. After doing that, surprisingly, a lot of tourists came to this town to see these old towns. The problem was marketings, not old buildings. Thus the city could make a lot of profit. According to experts, at this time, if the city demolished these old buildings, consequently they lost more than a million dollars from tourism. On top of that, new buildings are not aesthetically good. Every city has its own mood that came from its old buildings. However, new buildings can distract all of that. For instance, when Seoul in South Korea decided to destroy its old city hall which has a lot of historical value and reconstruct its new city hall, they made a plan to build a modern building designed by prominent architecture. However, when the city finished rebuilding, the city had to deal with a lot of citizen’s complaints. Since its glass wall that reflects all about its surroundings from the old Joseon dynasty palace to the mountain is not mingle with the city's environments which were that antique and calm.
To sum up, old buildings are beneficial for cities when the city makes a marketing campaign appropriately, and new buildings distract the city’s mood. For these reasons, I strongly insist that it is better to protect old buildings, especially which have historical value. |
