▶ Your Answer : It is very hard for young people to get a job right after graduating from university. Thus, universities are required to focus on teaching more practical skills rather than on teaching academic subjects. However, in my opinion, students can learn practical skills they need in any other institutions. Universities should concentrate on teaching students to broaden their perspectives and improve comprehensive thinking to get a good job.
First of all, the purpose of university is not to teach just practical skills necessary for a job. Students can take advantage of learning practical skills in any other educational institutions, which may be better places to be learned more effectively and cheaply. For example, I chose to major in English literature in order to be fluent and competent in using English. Yet, I had few chance to learn how to communicate with others in English in the university. Instead, I learned practical English at the English language institution near my house. I paid for taking an extra class at night to improve my English. It cost not so much, though. Students can use any other qualified educational institution to learn practical knowledge and skills. Universities do not need to put much energy on that.
On top of that, universities should put a priority on broadening perspectives and enhancing comprehensive thinking of students over teaching just practical skills. Universities should teach what is essential in their lives, how they think and feel about the world, and how they can apply their major knowledge to the real world. These are the most important and crucial skills to live a successful life. Practical skills can be valid temporarily, but comprehensive views and way of thinking can be permanent competence for students, which will lead to getting a qualified job after all.
In brief, students can learn practical skills needed for a job in any other institution. Moreover, students should learn more important knowledge and skills in the universities. In this regard, I maintain that universities do not need to spend their energy on teaching practical skills. |
