As every part in life is like a coin that has two different sides, everyone must ruminate the pros and cons before rushing to conclusions. In general, each and every question or topic needs subtle deliberation in that there are always a number of variables to a truth. In my humble opinion, great films have more versatile roles than just showing lessons of life about actual life.
First and foremost, the majority of individuals would agree with the notion that the sole purpose of a film is not for lessons. The main reason behind this rationale is that throughout the history of film, people touted a myriad of horror or thriller movies as much as they have done to works which enlightened audiences: Joker, Jaws, and Jurassic Park would be few examples. To illustrate more thoroughly, even if some films are entirely made for entertainment, critics would evaluate them as masterpieces when they check sensitive details or cinematic techniques and find them perfect.
On top of this, it can be an inaccurate assumption that lessons are always self-evident truths. In the eyes of many people in present society, understanding of precepts depends on the individual as personal experiences and morals differ among us. This inherent gap makes us perceive the same sentence differently and often leads to misunderstandings; people would not equally recognize the hidden message as a director originally intended. If lessons cannot provide the clear and same answers about real life, those films are not supposed to be noted as the best films. The great example of this would be my little sister. She and I watched the movie “The Great Gatsby” in which the main character Gatsby could not be happy despite his great fortune. I thought the lesson of the film was “a stitch in time saves nine.” However, I was surprised that my sister’s one was “do not love the rich.” It is clear to me that delivering lessons is not the trump card to the top movie.
In summation, it is virtually impossible to bring up a completely gratifying answer to an open-ended question. Although the jury may be out on this given essay topic, we can come to a mutual agreement that movies that do not contain lessons also deserve to be called as the best film due to the reasons and details mentioned above.
