According to the reading passage, there is ample support for the author's claim that the Everglades are being destroyed by significantly hazardous problems such as water pollution, soil erosion and artificial development. However, the professor in the lecture gives several reasons as a rebuttal to the author's point.
First, the professor insists that water pollution which is caused by agricultural process has significantly reduced than before. This is because, government enacts new regulation on controlling use and disposal of chemical fertilization nowadays. Moreover, the government is forcing farmers to switch fertilization as new one which contains less hazard substances, so it would impact environment less than before. This contradicts the reading passage's claim that chemicals from fertilization are spoiling water by getting rid of a large amount of oxygen in water, destroying ecosystem.
Next, the professor contends that it is unlikely that soil is disappearing because of wind erosion. Even though there is still wind erosion, but new rich soils are moved and restored from other places, which is faster than disappearing. Moreover, constructing some facilities such as water pipe would be helpful to prevent erosion and keep fertile soil. This refutes the reading passage's claim that rich soil has been vanished, and continuing this situation would only leave bare ground which plants cannot grow.
Finally, the professor argues that it is untrue that consistent construction for human is hazardous to the Everglades. Government of Florida has bought a large number of properties in the Everglades, and makes an effort to turn sugar farms to wild natural land. This would increase a large amount of habits that animal species can use, so it would be more chance to survive for animal. This casts doubts on the reading passage's claim that human development is destroying the habits of animals in the land, and this will lead extinction of animal species in the near future.
