▶ Your Answer : A large number of people might think that it is better for students to focus on developing one skill than dealing with as many skills as possible. Of course, developing one skill and being an expert is a good strategy to get a job. Nonetheless, I would like to point out that being a versatile person is more advantageous than having only one skill for the following reasons.
First of all, developing a variety of skills is helpful for creative thinking. Creativity comes from connecting two or more things that seem to be a discord superficially. That is, in order to be creative, we should have broad knowledge across many fields in advance, and then should be able to draw a line between two different dots that seems to be far away from each other. If we have broad knowledge, we can apply one thing to another and improve our creativity. According to a study conducted by Seoul National University in 2003, group A that has learned only one subject showed approximately ten percent point less creativity than group B that has learned more than five subjects.
Secondly, dealing with various things is less boring. Some say being able to do something very well just like a pro is good for getting a job. However, in order to be able to do so, we cannot avoid harsh training and we should undergo many repetitions. This is a very boring process. Therefore, rather than developing only one skill, learning many skills is more interesting. Furthermore, it is more likely that we continue learning them, not stopping. For example, in my free time, I usually play the piano, read books, and listen to music. I like playing the piano but I don't want to play the piano for five hours. If I play the piano one hour, I feel congenial but if five hours, I don't.
In conclusion, I firmly believe that it is better to learn various skills than developing only one skills for the reasons I mentioned above. All in all, the importance of being a versatile person should not be underestimated. |
