Movies mainly play two roles, one of which is to entertain people and the other is to motivate people to engage in various issues. Although the demarcation is not clear, the two types diverge in many cases. Therefore, before selecting a movie, viewers should decide the purpose of watching. Basically, it depends on what the viewers want. Nevertheless, I would recommend to choose entertaining movie, because of following reasons: visual media can distort truth; movies represent particular perspectives; modern people need more rest. First, I argue that movies are not proper media to convey truth. Some movie directors contend that their movies capture important facets of human personal and social lives, so their movie spur people to reflect on the world. I disagree with this claim; people cannot resist the messages of movies while watching because movies are one-directional media. Thus, movies can mislead the viewers. Third, amusing movies provide valuable rest in the modern society. Contemporary people are living in a hectic world; there are severe competitions, serious economic recessions, and growing disparity between the rich and the poor. In this situation, people have to relieve their stress not to burn out. Amusing movies without any sober messages can help them refreshing themselves. Those movies energize people to live more sustainable life. Second, serious moives are often biased with mainstream standpoint in the film industry. The Academy Awards in the United States is one example. Even though It is one of the most celebrated flim event in the world, it has become a point of rigorous debate recently. The winners usually are male, white people who belong to the most powerful social class in the US society. Thus, their works embody their own stance. To recap, there are reasons for prefering entertaining movies over serious moives. Movies are inherently not suitable for delivering messages; serious movies often assume views of specific social class; entertaining movies help people rest. Thus, I think amusing and light movies are better. |
