Dear Hepster
On behalf of the Department of Chemistry, it is our pleasure to offer you admission to the Ph.D. program in Chemistry, beginning in August 2003. This offer includes an appointment as a Graduate Teaching Assistant (GTA), and is contingent upon meeting the admission requirements of the Graduate College, University of Arizona and providing the Department documentation of eligibility to be legally employed in the United States. Although the Arizona Board of Regents has not yet set the GTA salaries (or tuition and fees) for 2003/2004, the salary for a Chemistry GTA in his/her first year will be at least:
GTA Salary $ 16,671
Summer 2004 support $ 2,811
Total for 2003/2004 calendar year $ 19,482
The current appointment also includes a waiver of out-of-state tuition (approximately $4,260 per semester). Therefore, your only financial obligation will be in-state registration fees of approximately $1,254 per semester which are required of all students. A payroll deduction option is available. As part of your offer the Graduate College will provide a registration rebate of $311.00 per semester, reducing your in-state fees to only $934.00 per semester. You will receive this rebate approximately six weeks into the semester from the Graduate College in your paycheck.
All students appointed to a GTA or GRA receive individual health insurance coverage at no charge. The annual value of this coverage is currently $1063.
Many of our advanced graduate students (second year and beyond) are supported as a Graduate Research Assistant (GRA). A student appointed to a GRA does not have teaching responsibilities, which allows the student to conduct full-time research. You will remain eligible for the out-of-state tuition waiver and financial support, either as a GTA or GRA, each semester for a period of at least five years, provided that you are making satisfactory progress as a full-time student in the Ph.D. program. Continuing support as a GTA is also contingent on satisfactory performance in the teaching program. You must pass the TSE, SPEAK test or teaching audition by the end of the first semester to remain eligible for support.
The University of Arizona offers an exceptional environment for pursuing graduate studies in chemistry. Offers of admission with financial support into our program are extremely competitive and we congratulate you on your success. We are enthusiastic about you joining us and we hope that you will accept this offer. It is important that we have your final decision no later than April 15, 2003. Please inform us of your decision by fax (1-520-621-8407) or electronic mail (chemistry@arizona.edu). Upon acceptance of this offer you should plan to be settled in Tucson prior to August 11, 2003 the tentative date on which orientation for entering graduate students will begin. Non U.S. citizens have extra responsibilities to complete before the start of orientation and should plan on arriving and contacting the department by August 4, 2003. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions about this offer or any other aspect of our graduate program.
Enclosed you will find some information about the Chemistry Department, University of Arizona and information about the Tucson area. If you have access to World Wide Web, additional information can be found on: "www.arizonaguide.com".
Sincerely,
