Duration of Offer: Five years beginning Fall 2011
For the duration of the offer, financial support will include:
• a full tuition waiver for each Fall and Winter term
• at the 50% GSI stipend level, which will be no less than $2,150 monthly
• health and dental insurance benefits
• Support for subsequent years typically includes a Graduate Student Research Assistantship (GSRA). Graduate Student Instructorships and/or possibly a fellowship may be assigned if a GSRA position is pending.
• This offer is contingent upon uninterrupted enrollment for fall and winter semesters, solely in the Mechanical Engineering Ph.D. Program. The offer is also contingent upon your satisfactory progress toward the degree. Satisfactory progress includes participation in at least six credit hours of research during the first three academic terms of study and passing the written and oral components of the Mechanical Engineering Graduate Core Curriculum (GCC) and the Research Fundamental Exam (RFE) before your fifth full term of enrollment.
• Satisfactory progress on research will be evaluated once per year after you achieve candidacy. If your advising situation changes, you should have a research advisor by the end of your 3rd semester and not be without the support of an advisor for a period of more than 3 months after the end of the 3rd semester. During your pre-candidacy period, your progress in coursework and research will be evaluated two times per year to make sure that your Ph.D. studies have started up without difficulties. If issues arise, we would like to discover them early so please raise any questions or concerns with the Director of the Graduate Program at any time.
• Satisfactory progress on research also depends on the ability to effectively communicate concepts in oral and written English. International students are expected to have passed our GSI English exam by December 2011 for Winter 2011 admits or by May 2012 for Fall 2011 admits. Certain international students, particularly those who attended an undergraduate institution that instructed purely in English, are exempt from the exam.
• If you are the recipient of a National Science Foundation or other prestigious national fellowship, we can supplement your fellowship with departmental funds in order to provide a personal computer, travel allowance, books and supplies.
