Undoubtedly, both
speaking and writing are essential skills in language use. Some people might
think that writing well is more important than speaking well, while others
might not. If I have to choose one, I would say that speaking is more
imperative compared to writing. There are several reasons as follows.
To begin with, speaking allows people to
broaden their horizons while communicating with diverse people. Communication
exposes people to acknowledge the fact that
different values exist, to understand diverse customs and cultures, and
eventually to be familiar with them. Fluent speaking encourages people to have
more interactions with others, leading them to
understand other individuals. For instance, when I was in high school, I met a
friend from Ethiopia,
who ate eating his meal with bare hands.
I was surprised at his behavior, and even sometimes made fun of him. However,
when he presented his culture at history class, all classmates including me
understood him correctly. The most contributing factor why we changed our attitude
was his speaking skillset. In particular, he communicated with profound
attitude towards his culture, used a trustworthy voice, and finished his speech with a clear message.
In addition, people with fluent speaking abilities can be more competitive in a wide array of
business fields. As the modern society has
become more competitive and complicated, many firms require candidates to be
well-trained at speaking, such as presentation skillset. People who are
brilliant at speaking might have more chances to
earn a higher income, ultimately leading them to
be happy at their lives. For example, recently I read an article from Stanford
Business School regarding presentation skills. In that article, researchers
found there are strong correlations between
speaking and salary level. When interviewers are impressed by excellent
presentation skills, they are more willing to hire job candidates, even though
speaking is just a part of work.
All things considered, I firmly believe
that speaking is one of the most important skills
to broaden people’s views
and to be competitive increase competitiveness.
Especially in this fast-paced world, it there
is no doubt that having specialty on speaking will become more significant.
