Some people think that students do not have to wear
school uniforms in high school. However, in my opinion, choosing a certain type
of uniform to wear is advantageous for high school students. The reasons are
that wearing a school uniform can prevent discrimination against poor students
and instill discipline.
First of
all, making school uniforms compulsory can prohibit discrimination against
impoverished students. This is because a student’s clothes can expose one’s
socioeconomic status involuntarily. For example, when I was in high school,
school uniforms were not mandatory for students. My class consisted of 30
students and one of my classmates was very rich because his father was running
a large manufacturing company. He was always dressed up loudly and many
classmates wanted to hang out with him. In contrast, another student was always
humbly clothed because his family was very poor and could not afford new
clothes for him. Unfortunately, I spotted that the other classmates hesitated
to get along with him. I thought that they looked down on him due to his shabby
clothes.
Second,
wearing a uniform can teach discipline to students. Our society are is full of
discipline and laws that we have to follow. People should obey the laws and
regulations to be a member of the community. It is very important for people to
obey the laws to keep public order. By following the rules in the society, we
can live together avoiding invasion of other people’s rights. For this
reason, students need to learn that they have to follow a rule which is
socially agreed, even if they do not like it.
In a nutshell, by taking
discrimination against poor students and teaching discipline into
consideration, the advantages of wearing school uniforms far outweigh the
disadvantages of it. In this these regards, I firmly hold that school uniforms should be
mandatory in high school.
