It is often said that students should learn the ideas, trends and concepts that help understand certain facts before they study the facts. This make sense because sophisticated and professional knowledge of a field cannot be absorbed without fundamental concepts in the field. Science subjects like math are typical examples. However, in some subjects like music that need creativity, pre-acquired knowledge can be a disability. To begin with, imagine that students study math without basic concepts. To be specific, is it possible that a student who have never learned a concept of multiplication figures calculus out? Nobody answers that it is possible. This is because that theories, concepts and ideas in science is based on older theories and concepts that provided earlier. In fact, secondary schools teach old concepts and higher educational institutions like universities teach relatively new concepts. In contrast, art classes do not have to provide the systematic curriculum mentioned above. This is because art is a field where artist should appear their creativity. Pre-absorbed expertise can impede the creative work. A story of a couple of fine artists is famous. Each style of two artists was admired in their field. However, after they were full in love, their different characteristics became similar. This is because one learned another's unique skills. As the result, they lost their reputations and their works could not have as high value as before they met. |
