It has been widely debated whether it is better for school children to get a professional tutor when they need help with their school work than to get help from their friends. But, I strongly oppose the view that young students had better get help from their friends rather than are helped by a professional tutor. First of all, children can improve their shortcomings and ultimately, develop social skills while discussing with each other. The secondary reason I offer is that getting help from their friends can enhance their problem solving skills.
Most importantly, while doing school work together, children can improve their social skills. When they help each other, they can socialize with their friends. Skeptics of my main line of argument may argue that this reason does not sound like a reasonable position at first sight. Nevertheless, to their dismay, there exists an abundance of examples that substantiate my claim. Here is one of them. When I was in middle school, I was good at mathematics, but I had a difficulty of doing school work of language. At that time, whenever I had something hard to understand in language course, I asked some friends who are skilled at language courses. At the same time, since I was confident in mathematics, I could help them to do school work in mathematics. While doing the work, we could socialize with each other, and could make very good relationships. This example illustrates that when young students need help with their school work, it is better for them to ask friends for help rather than get a professional tutor.
Additionally, by interacting with friends when they need help with school work, young students enhance their insights. While growing up, they usually are immersed by certain types of knowledge and information. In particular, if they just get help from a professional tutor, they can easily become biased without having any chances to broaden their horizon. This is because most of the knowledge and information is conveyed with a tutor’s viewpoint. Thus, in order to gain a variety of views and become cultured, young people should be encouraged to solve their school work with their friends. According to a research conducted by Harvard University, students who have had many chances to participate in debate classes have various viewpoints and excellent problem-solving skills. A college student who took part in the research answered that he was strongly helped by discussions with his friends while doing school work. He also responded that if it had not been for the intense discussions in classes, he might not have solved higher level of problems in college classes.
In summary, I disagree that young students had better get help from their friends rather than being helped by a tutor when they need help with school work for the aforementioned reasons. Primarily, while doing school work together, children can socialize with their friends. Furthermore, they can enhance their insights and have better problem-solving skills.
