▶ Your Answer :
Grades play a
significant role in students’ daily lives in many of the places where they
study or play. Some people think that schools should let students know their
own grades because it promotes their academic performances, while others do
not. Both sides may have their own reasons to support their ideas. If I were
asked to choose one, I would say that providing grades to students is necessary
to improve their learning. There are several reasons as follows.
To begin with,
knowing their grades help students put more energy into learning. When students
are provided with their grades, they are likely to compare them with others’
grades. This competition encourages students to study harder, hoping to
outperform the others on the next exam. For example, my youngest sister never
bothered to study when she was in her elementary school because she did not
know that she did poorly in school. However, when she entered middle school,
she received her grades and started to go to a library. She did not want to get
poor grades, because it weakens her self-confidence. She spent more time on
studying and doing homework. Consequently, at the end of the middle school, she
graduated as one of the top-grade students.
On top of that,
when students are provided with their grades, they can study more efficiently.
With the grade of each subject, students can easily find which subjects to
study more. To improve overall academic performances, students should work hard
on subjects which they are not good at, and spend less time on those which they
perform well. For instance, I found myself advantageous on literature, but poor
on mathematics. When I realized this by receiving grades of respective
subjects, I could reschedule my study plan by maximizing time shared for mathematics
and minimizing time for literature. As a result, I could get overall good
grades at the SAT.
To sum up, when
schools provide students with their own grades, students will spend more time
on learning and study efficiently. In this regard, I firmly believe that it is
good to award grades to students in a purpose of developing their learning.
