Some people think that a teacher’s wage should depend on his or her students’ performance. They may think that it makes teachers stimulated to teach their students diligently. However, in my opinion, teachers’ income should not be based on their students’ achievement because it makes teachers think of students as a means to make money and rises excessive competition between teachers. To begin with, teachers can regard students as a tool to earn money. If teachers can get more money when their students get good grades, they stress to study to students intensively and do not care about other things such as special abilities, relationships and extracurricular activities. It means that teachers can use students as a method to make money. For instance, when I was in a high school, all of my classmates respected my homeroom teacher because she encouraged us to improve our own specialities and did not treat us with discrimination. However, one day, the school started to give teachers their income depending on our academic achievement. As time passed by, my homeroom teacher started to treat us differently because of our grades and praised particular students for their good grades. She also kept emphasizing that we should study more to get higher grades. I was disappointed because I felt that my teacher thought of us as machines that make her more money. On top of that, it brings excessive competition between teachers. Teachers can earn more money when their students show them better performance than others’ students. Thus, teachers have a sense of rivalry and avoid to cooperate with other teachers because they want their own students to make good grades. I can take an example of my friend who is a history teacher at a middle school. She enjoyed teaching students and working with teachers at her school. Teachers shared good resources and materials together to improve their teachings. However, one day, the school decided to pay teachers’ wages depending on their students’ performance. Most teachers did not like it at first but they were going to be competitive and set the boundary between their students and others’ students. Teachers do not cooperate to develop the whole classes and they are sensitive only about their own students. My friend said that she feels stressed when she prepares examinations and gives marks with co-workers because of unnecessary competition. To sum up, I believe that teachers’ earning should not be based on their students’ achievement. This is due to the fact that teachers regard their students as a tool of earning money and it rises excessive and unnecessary competition between them.
