The reading passage covers three major
points concerning the disappearance of Anasazi civilization and its cause. The
listening passage, which is also of the same topic, clearly states why these
points are debatable.
The first point made in the reading passage
is that less nutrient bones are found in the graves and hence it can be
contributed that infrequent rainfall reduced crop production and the people had
less food. The speaker, however, challenges this by mentioning that the health
issue was prevalent regardless of the amount of rainfall. Also, roughly 85% of
the people suffered malnutrition even in the bountiful years because they had
to provide their product to a religious leader. Hence, the less nutrient bones may
not be an effective reason of the drought.
Another point made by the reading is that
the people reserved the town in order to come back when the dry season ends.
Again, to the contrary, the lecture asserts that this is not true due to the
fact that they did not return to home. The records show that Anasazi people did
not go back to their original habitat even after the drought had ended. Thus,
blocked town entrance might not be a persuasive reason to support the entire
topic.
Lastly, the reading passage claims that
Anasazi people tried to resettle in the place where it has reliable water
supplies. The professor further debunks this by saying that the place they
settled were Arizona in the US where the water supply is not adequate. The
weather they choose to settle is arid and very hard to live. Therefore, their effort
to find hydrated place is probably not a viable reason. |
