An intriguing topic at hand is whether
art and music should be designated as mandatory school subjects coupled with
math, history, science and language. Many people might insist that learning art
and music is not so imperative in child education, but I adamantly believe that
cultivating artistic value is one of the core elements in one’s holistic growth;
it not only facilitates personality education, but also greatly affects one’s academic
achievement overall. To begin with, education is not acquiring
a given set of information. Rather, it is a comprehensive, step-by-step process
that helps one to become a decent human-being. In this sense, school subjects
need to include personality education where children can learn how to communicate
with people in the entire society. As art is an essential tool for expressing
one’s minds and thoughts to others, it is qualified enough to be a part of school curriculum.
This is also demonstrated by the recent study by the Seoul National University,
children who have access to artistic subjects have higher level of communication
ability than those who do not. Next, artistic education can also lead
to be successful in other academic subjects such as math, science and so forth.
Art and music are alleged to have a positive effect on one’s mental health,
which is directly connected to the academic achievement in general. Let me bring
my own experience as an example. When I was a high school student, playing piano
in music class endowed me an easing moments and made me relax, away from a
highly stressful situation with a series of exams ahead, which subsequently helped
me better focus on my test subjects. In this vein, art and music can rather enhance
the chance to be successful in academic life in general.
To sum, it can be said that school
children have to learn art and music as mandatory subjects; otherwise, these
classes can easily be put aside from the top priority of school curriculum.
Though it is still widely believed that art and music are not directly related
to one’s education, they can nurture humanistic values for children and it in
fact has a strong influence on one’s academic journey by relieving his or her
stress. |
