Great importance is ascribed to one’s language ability in the present era. English is a mandatory for all non-English speaking countries as well, like Korea for example. As early as Primary school, parents are enthusiastic in getting their child to learn foreign languages as soon as possible. Foreign languages have become a vital part of school work and students grades or exams. Thus, those who started comparatively late experience a harder time in their foreign language studies. Therefore, I strongly believe that children should begin learning a foreign language as soon as they start school.
First of all, learning at an early age is more beneficial. Children tend to learn things more quickly and more naturally. I personally immigrated to New Zealand when I was very young. At the time I didn’t even know the alphabet but as I started attending school it only took me a few months to be fluent in speaking English. On the other hand, older students who go overseas to learn foreign languages experience a harder time. As seen above, results are more positive when students learn at a younger age.
Secondly, children will enjoy the process of learning more than they would when they’re older. For young children there are many methods to learning languages and studying, for instance, acting out learned knowledge, following the teacher, singing, drawing, etc. Also the level of studying is easier; as a result, children can enjoy studying. However, for the secondary and high school students, or even college students, studying is the only method and choice. It is less entertaining and harder so many tend to give up studying foreign languages. |
