Both the reading passage and the lecture are about the topic of lead poisoning in Roman Empire. The professor in the lecture refutes the points given in the reading passage regarding lead poisoning triggered the collapse of Roman Empire by explaining the invalidating points involved.
First of all, the professor maintains that in order to occur lead poisoning, for a lead poisoning to happen. it should be ingested into the blood stream. However, Romans did not ingest their cosmetics into their body. Hence, this is contrary to the point in the reading passage that lead contained cosmetics caused the lead poisoning among the Roman upper class.
In addition, the professor argues that even though it is true that water pipes were made of lead, the water was not contaminated. It is because there was calcium inside of the pipe that creates the protective coat between the water and the pipe. In this sense, the water had very little direct contact with lead. Thus, this goes against the point in the reading passage that water pipe spreaded the lead poisoning among the Roman elite. (잘들으셨습니다)
Lastly, the professor points out that sapa was highly diluted by water and only small quantiy was added into the wine. So, it is too trivial to cause the lead poisoning. Therefore, this differs from the point in the reading passage that sapa spreaded the lead poisoning among Romans. |
