▶ Your Answer :
There is a controversy between the lecturer and the speaker as to whether the making bicycle lane is reasonable or not. The lecturer argues that ,according to a survey which is conducted by a city that already made bicycle lane, it brought bad impact on both the riders and drivers. This contradicts the writer's opinion that it would bring many benefits.
To begin with, the lecturer argues that it had no impact on the environment. According to the lecturer, after building a lane for bicycle, there was less than 1 % increase in number of bicycle users because many of commuters soon realized that riding a bicycle is too demanding. Therefore, there was no difference in the environment. This directly opposes the writer's claim that it will reduce pollutants; this is because it will reduce a number of car users.
On top of that, the lecturer argues that there would be more stress to car users. To be specific, she points out that car drivers became impatient as their commute hours took longer, which is already long. Also, they will be furious of reduced lane which is used to provide bicycle lane. This counters the writer's argument that it would help everyone by persuading car drivers would rather choose bicycle to commute by car and reducing traffic jam.
Lastly, the lecturer argues that bicycle commuter would be in danger. She explains that even though there is bicycle lane, car drivers are not used to it and are likely to make accidents such as opening a cardoor at the lane which could evoke crash with bicycle users. This casts doubt on the writer's assertion that it would reduce the number of car accidents between car drivers and bicycle riders which is attributed to not noticing the riders.
