▶ Your Answer :
Opinions might be over whether children
should be inhibited to watch TV. People from different walks of life may take
different stances on this issue. Personally, I believe that parents should prevent
their children from watching TV, and there are two reasons that could validate
my position.
The first point that I would like to make
in supporting my view is that inappropriate content in television programs,
such as sex and violence, makes young people reckless and aggressive. Today,
many television programs use sexual and suggestive images to appeal to more
viewers. When constantly exposed to such TV programs, young children are likely
to be impulsive in their thoughts and behavior. A report from a consumer
watchdog group pointed out that the number of violent and aggressive scenes on
TV has more than tripled over the past five years. More surprising was the
finding that students who make it a rule to watch TV after school suffer from uneasy
relationships with others because of their fierce and uncontrollable
personality. Given this, watching TV has negative effect on teenager’s
personality.
Another compelling reason that should be
taken into account is that inadequate and distorted information from television
series has great influence on a sense of judgment of young people. Of course, a
wealth of information in TV may be beneficial for students by broadening their perspectives
and views about the world. However, because of inaccuracy and impartiality of
information, many students feel confused among conflicting facts and unreliable
rumors, especially concerning political and social issues. For example, a study
by Seoul National University covered that how inappropriate and biased information
affects children’s judgment for their interests negatively. The study revealed
that more than 60 percent of the respondents said that they put more trust in what
they saw and heard from TV program, not long afterward, regret to decision based
on those information from television. This means that students can become those
of who lack the ability to judge and interpret their problems. In this regard, improper information should be
prohibited to protect children from making foolish decision.
All in all, because of reasons mentioned
above, I firmly believe that parents should put restriction on their children’s
time to watch television.
