There is a controversy about judgement of a person based on the first impression. Some people say that first impressions is the most important factor to judge the person. However, in my point of view, quickly judging a person's character holds various disadvantages.
To begin with, relying on the first impression might cause to miss a person's true character.
The first impression is just only a little part of the person's whole personality. Because we tend to focus on personal aspects only we can easily observe, we do not carefully see a person's character with details such as behaviors or way of thinking. This tendency makes them difficult to properly percept other people.
For example, in a job interview, interviewers have only few minutes to communicate with the applicant. During that short time, most of interviewers quickly judge a person's personality and possibility. In order to solve this drawback of job interview system, now a number of companies introduce internship program to better understand the applicant's character.
On top of that, judgement on first impression may cause people too much focus on people's appearance.
When we meet a new person, what consists the first impression is the person's appearance. If we focus on only the first image in a short time, people will be more likely to see outer appearance, ignoring inner beauty. Concerning too much about appearance has been a form of social problem. In these days, a number of people try to get a plastic surgery because they want to give good impression to others with better appearance. However, this trend negatively affect proper human relationships. People excessively pay attention to other's appearance whatever the person's personality is.
Lastly, it may also negatively affect my personal image.
If I quickly judge a person without careful thought, he or she also might judge me as a careless person. In order to give good impression to others, we need to judge a person after careful consideration. Sometimes, this hasty judgement harms a person's reputation. For example, when I was in college, one of my classmate made his friends only by looking first impressions. At fist, I thought his human network was quite broad, however, many people blamed his attitude carelessly making friends without any consideration.
To sum up, judgement a person based on the first impressions does not help us at all. It not only makes us ignore the true personality, but also badly influence our proper human relationships.
In this regard, I firmly believe that relying on the first impressions is not appropriate to judge a person's character. |
