Many people believe that advertisements offer valuable and practical information to consumers without exaggerations. My view, however, is that I agree with the idea that advertisements make products seem much better. This is because companies want to catch people’s attention and make good images of their products in order to survive in competitive markets.
To begin with, since many companies want to catch consumer’s attention and sell more products, they tend to highlight only the product’s positive aspects while advertising. In other words, they sometimes make their products seem much better than what they really are in commercials. For example, I recently watched a TV commercial about a digital music player. It emphasized the player’s compatibility with various sound file formats and its excellent design. Although I already owned a digital music player and had no plans to buy a new one, I was fascinated by the products’ features and decided to buy it. However, not long afterward, I found that it is does not have a random-play function, which is a basic of almost every digital music player. As this example shows, the product in the advertisement is enough to grab my attention by looking better what they really are. Had it not been for exaggerating information, I would not have gone ahead to but it.
On top of that, most companies put every effort to make good images of their product in commercials. This is due to the fact that today’s markets are so competitive that it is hard to survive for companies in the market without better images than other companies. For instance, according to a study released by the Korean Times, successful businesses tend to use celebrities in their advertisements in order to enhance the products’ image in people’s mind. The study also revealed that consumers are likely to feel the products that celebrities advertise are more attractive than those are not Therefore, based on this study, it is obvious that in order not to fall behind in competitive markets, companies run advertisements by using celebrities, making good images. |
