It is often argued that teachers should not make social or political view known to students in the classroom. Even though the jury is still out, I completely agree with the statement. The rationale behind this is that it is a great opportunity for students to debate practical issues of societies. Moreover, in the 21st century, a critical thinking on social or political matters is one of the most significant abilities.
First, students are able to consider about realistic subjects of their social or political circumstances. In other words, even though discussing themes except for these subjects does have importance in its own ways, it is more justifiable to contend that students who have learned only theoretical or academic knowledge need to study controversial issues in societies to improve their practical insights in real life. For example, according to a research recently conducted by the National Research Foundation of Korea, people who read newspaper articles which cover social and political topics can earn higher social statuses and be adaptable to societies. This is attributed the reason that these articles offer opportunities for people to expose themselves to what is going on in societies, thereby serving a critical function for acquiring superior statuses and business adaptability. Thus, this clearly indicates how making social or political outlooks known to students.
In addition, in the 21st century, a critical faculty on social or political problems is regarded as one of the most crucial abilities. That is largely because social or political power of civic organizations has significantly increased. For example, according to many scholars on sociology, the number of social organizations has grown 4 times bigger than past. This implies that social and political responsibility of each citizen also has increased; a critical thinking of each person plays important role in societies. Therefore, this again shows why students should debate on social or political issues with teachers to develop their critical skill.
In conclusion, I strongly believe that teachers should not make social or political view known to students in the classroom. The reasons are not only that it is a great opportunity for students to debate practical issues of societies, but also in the 21st century, a critical thinking on social or political matters is one of the most significant abilities. Therefore, these are the two most convincing reasons for my contention.
