It is often said that people should not move to different places because they would lose friends. However, I believe that moving to another country can have more chances to make many new friends and have a positive effects on our life for two reasons : to throw out a prejudice and to improve one’s social skills.
To begin with, moving to different places allows people to overcome the prejudice with one another. It is obvious that new place will expose people to different worlds of lifestyles, basic customs and cultures, and they can be familiarized with and embrace other cultures and people. Thus, one can make different friends with different backgrounds, which helps to reduce prejudice and be open-minded towards “strangers.” For example, when I was in fifth grade, there was an Ethiopian girl who brought home-cooked meals for lunch. It smelled funny, and she ate with her hands without using utensils, and other students who had never seen such a thing kept their distances from her. On the other hand, I felt comfortable with it, having visited Africa and experienced a similar situation.

In addition, meeting many new people enables one to enhance his or her social skills. This is because moving around much a lot forces one to interact with one another in order to survive in the new environment. Therefore, he or she is given chances to learn to socialize with others by being extroverted. For instance, my youngest brother used to be shy and timid. He was rarely involved in social activities. He changed little by little after having moved around all over the globe because of our father’s business. He realized that his introverted personality made it hard to adjust to new schools in ways such as making new friends and receiving tips related to schoolwork. Forced to survive, he naturally became a conversation starter and a social butterfly, and started showing interest in the school sports events and parties.
