I love to watch movies, and especially most
favorite genre is zombies and disasters. I already have watched all of the
movies that we have to watch for the assignment. I have watched “VOLCANO” 3
times. But after I learned about a volcano, it was so interesting to me. In the movie, when
volcano exploded along with extrusive rocks, in spite of myself, I immediately
assumed that rocks must be basalts and kind of igneous rocks. This movie is
related a lot with my ESC100 class. First of all, because vocabularies sound familiar
to me, I didn’t need to search the words: lava, epicenter, and tar etc., which I
already learned through the lecture. Even though I've not felt realized only
listen a lecture about volcano activities, I felt lot of things through the
movie its reality.
Let me sum up this movie. Volcano is a disaster movie, with
a budget of $70 million, directed by Mick Jackson in 1997 and produced by
Andrew Z. Davis, Neal H. Moritz and Lauren Shuler Donner. The main actor is
Tommy Lee Jones who performance as Mike Roark, the head of LA's Office of
Emergency Management., and the main actress Anne Heche is casted as Dr. Amy
Barnes. The movie is begun by the scene that a handful of pipe engineers die
from intense burns while underground. Expert
Dr. Amy Barnes believes that magma may be coming up to the surface of the earth
and causing the events. Nobody took her opinion until the tar pits overflow and
start to pour lava onto the streets, destroying everything in its path. During
the whole city is plunged in confusion, they devised various schemes to kill
the lava. The first lava is cut off narrowly by called K-rail, around 100 fire
trucks and 20 helicopters. But it is not the end. The main danger is the second
which is very fluid in the underground passage and is going to explode at the
end of the passage. So Roark make the plan that destroying a huge building will
be used as a dam which can change the flow of the lava to the hospital. Finally
the plan is succeeded to flow the lava to the sea.
The fly in the ointment
1.
When a
volcano is erupted, it is accompanied with toxic gases. It does not make sense
that people don’t get the damage from toxic gases, and people stride down the
street too much without the symptom.
2.
When
you put water in lava for extinguishing, It is generated a welter of vapor. The
high temperature of vapor is enough to grille person who try to put off the
lava, but people quench a fire with water lightly.
