I cannot totally agree the speaker`s suggestion that well speaking ability is more important than writing skill. In some sense, it is more required to speak well than to write. Only by focusing on the advantage of speaking, however, the speaker ignore the significance of writing skill, in context of academic field and
Of course, speaking well is often more important than writing well. In a certain occupational groups that excellent achievement results from superior conversation ability, speaking ability is more effective factor on the excellent outcomes than writing skill. For instance, the teacher which requires a well conversation skill between pupil and master would suffer from the absence of well speaking skills to lead effective outcomes in their course, even though they are a fine prose writer. It reveals that speaking well would be more important than writing skills in context of a certain job which require well conversation skills.
Nevertheless, it does not mean that speaking well is always more important than writing skills. With respect to academia, the scholars could be established by superior writing skill even though they have terrible speaking skill because the scholars are judged by their thesis or book. For example, T. Parsons who is famous sociologist in U.S didn`t have good conversation skill, he still remains a master of structure-functionalism theory. It indicates that it is more beneficial to learn writing skill than to practice speaking in academia.
Furthermore, writing well is certainly more important than speaking well beyond occupational group in another sense. When it comes to recording a human cultural heritage, writing skills have been more emphasized rather than speaking skills since the civilization occurred. Unfortunately, some of cultural heritage of American Indian have not remained since they defeated by ‘white pioneer’ because they not only record their culture by oral message but also didn`t advance writing skills. It would remains that their long-standing history if they put emphasis on writing skill rather than speaking skills likes a China civilization which is well-known record of society. It indicates that well writing skills have been significant than superior speaking skill in remaining human civilization and heritage
To sum, despite of advantages of putting emphasis on the speaking skill than writing skill, the context of academia and recording human cultural heritage tells us that the speaker`s asserts always could be right. Thus, I cannot totally agree the speaker`s suggestion. Only by ignoring the problems of academia and remaining cultural heritage could one conclude that speaking well is more important than writing well. |
