Although peers may have some influence on others' lives, family can change the course of who people meet and who they interact with. Often people choose the same profession as their parents and their political preferences equate to those of their parents.
Career is one area that is heavily influenced by family and background. As people may deny this apparent connection, I see a lot of people doing what their fathers do for a living. For a person who grew up in a business background, he/she is more prone to be a businessman like his dad. I, for example, enrolled in a medical school only to follow in my dad's footsteps whether or not I had intended. Initially I didn't want to be a doctor like him, but as I eventually became familiarized with my dad's career, my interests in the career increased enough to choose it as a career I wanted to pursue. Incidentally, Justice Thurgood Marshall of USA once recalled how his dad had punished and inspired him to become a judge. Whenever the little Marshall misbehaved, he would have to write the full text of the US Constitution, and this, he said, caused him to study more law and later commit himself. Family seems to play a great role in deciding not only the career but also political preferences.
There is a wide conseus that family is the single most important source of political influence. Depending on how one grew up from what political background, one maintains his political beliefs. One's party identification mostly
coincides with the family's choice. If one's family is Republican, then one usually becomes Republican, because he was surrounded by conservative values and people growing up. Research confirms this and shows that one is about 70% more likely to have the party identification identical to those of his parents. National Institute for Public Policy, furthermore, noted that more interaction or more time spent with family may be the primary reason for this occurence. Many a time, states vote in the same way they do and rarely does a switch happen. The same states vote Republican, and the same states vote Democrat. Since families don't move much in America while maintaining the same party, their politcal preferences stay unchanged.
In conclusion, among other things, one's career and political preference are affected by family values. Friends do play a role but not nearly much as family does. The more time one spends with someone, the more one resembles with someone. And family is the entity that most spend most time with. Therefore, I believe, family influnce trumps peer influence.
