A few years ago, a movie called “Supersize Me” was famous for criticizing a selling strategy making people’s health poor of a gigantic fast food corporation. Actually, many modern people suffer from diseases such as cancer and obesity. Some people think that advertising spoil people’s health as the same opinion with the movie and insist limitation of showing those advertisements. However, I think that it is not proper idea. Rather, changed lifestyle contributes to the problem more. In addition, advertisements related to foods are less and people accept those ads wisely than we think.
First of all, modern life pattern is different from past when there is no advertisement. People who live in a recent society are too busy to have a time to eat and they cannot help eating fast foods such as a hamburger. Also, stress from a competitive society makes people relieve it by eating something at late night.
Moreover, the number of advertisement linked to eating is small. According to a research about marketing and advertising, a rate of advertisement of foods or eating is about 15 percent. On the contrary, electronic devices such as a cell phone and TV are advertised more often. It shows that advertising of food do not have a great effect on poor eating habit of modern people.
Finally, humans are not foolish to consider that all ads are real. Most of people acknowledge that there is some exaggeration in advertising. Therefore, although the advertisement shows very delicious foods, all viewers of the ad do not eat it. If advertising is connected to purchase always directly, TV will be a machine to advertise only.
In conclusion, it is difficult that advertise is an important factor of bad eating habit. I think that a cause of changing habit is different lifestyle from past. In addition, frequency of food advertisement is lower than other goods and all people do not buy foods which are advertised on TV. All in all, I believe that excess blaming on advertisement derives from misunderstanding a circumstance. |
