▶ Your Answer :
Opinions may vary over whether the government should support science research even if it is not used. Some people say that it will be a waste of money and so opportunity cost arises meaning the money could have been spent of something else. Others argue that it will always be useful to keep the findings. In my opinion, the government should always subsidise as some scientific research may not be possible in the future and because the future is unforeseen.
First, if scientific experiments and research is not done today it may never be. This is because many natural resources are infinite or scarce which indicates that they may not be available in the future. For example, fossil fuels such as petrol will run out shortly even if scientists want to use it to investigate about its scientific features. Therefore, the government must act now to research anything they can do and leave it in the form of documents to let the future generation gain knowledge from it.
Second, one can never anticipate what will happen in the future. There may be worldwide health crisis that require integration of high levels of scientific knowledge to combat new viruses. However, without research, the virus may spread fast and eventually cause death of hundreds and thousands of people. Super national organizations such as the World Health Organization work together with its member states to tackle such health crisis. So that countries do not stand alone. In order for this to be effective, countries need to share techniques and medical information. However, without continuous efforts put in to research, this will be impossible. As a result, a large death may result.
Finally, without financial support from the government, much research will be unaffordable. This is because many scientific tools for experiments are too expensive for individuals to pay. If then, no one will bother to study science and this can lead to dangerous situations. This is because basic information or knowledge about toxic chemicals may not be educated to the public without professional scientists. For instance, the public may not know the danger involved in using heroines if scientists have not discovered about its side effects and addiction.
In conclusion, the government should support science research to allow future generations to gain knowledge about current scientists’ works. Moreover, in order to reduce the impacts of emergency crisis in the future, research is essential. On top of that, to avoid dangerous situations and to let scientists freely research without financial pressure.
