For quite as long as I can remember, people have debated whether teachers should not make social or political view known to students in the classroom. Even though the jury is still out, I strongly agree with the statement. The rational behind is that some biased viewpoints could be taught to students who haven't yet formed a point of view. Moreover, the primary role of teachers is to give students knowledge and help them to pursue their career after graduation.
First, students can get a wrong opinion. Even though some argues that it is only a teacher who helps their students to understand about social and political issues, it is more justifiable to contend that students have narrow views so they get their teacher’s opinion even if it is very biased view. For example, the Ministry of Education conducted a research recently where high school students with similar academic background were divided into two groups. Then, both group were taught the recently social issue, but each group learned different lecture. One group was informed of a negative viewpoint of social issue while the other group was told about objective the current situation excluding any opinion of social matter. Then, they wrote their own opinion about a current social. Not surprisingly, the group which had been taught negative viewpoints wrote their opinion about negative state of social up to 90%. However, the other group’s opinion was very diverse. Therefore, this is a clear illustration for why teachers don’t teach their social view in the classroom.
Additionally, giving knowledge and helping student’s career are in the main purpose in the classroom. Of course it may be true that discussing matter of social with teacher improves students' debating skills, but it is waste of time for students who decide their career. For example, when I was high school student, I influenced by my English teacher. She affected my English skill and my career. So, It is very crucial for students that discuss their own way. In other words, teachers wield great influence upon their students, so it takes up students’ time if they taught their viewpoints of social issues.
In conclusion, I wholeheartedly believe that teachers should not make social or political view known to students in the classroom. The reasons are not only that biased viewpoints could be taught to students who haven't yet formed a point of view, but also that the primary role of teachers is to give students knowledge and help them to pursue their career after graduation. Therefore, these are the two most convincing reasons for my contention. |
