Q. Teachers should not make their social and political views known to students in the classroom.
Some people might agree that teacher can assume their own perspectives when they teach students. They think it is inevitable that one has its way to judge and this way is naturally revealed through one’s speaking. However, I strongly believe that teachers should be more conscientious about their personal opinions when they give students teaching. This is because it is easy to narrow down students’ view on the world and also students have the right to be taught objectively.
The primary reason for this is that students tend to accept their teachers’ words without suspection or reflection. Therefore, if teachers make their own perspective known to students in the class, students are likely to have bias or stereotype on certain subject that they are taught. It is harmful for students to learn new facts and knowledge. To be specific, I was taught by my science teacher that global warming can be reversed by current technology in high school. A few years later, I saw a documentary on environmental problem and then I found out that there is an argument whether today’s technology is viable or not. Some scientist said that current technology has many limitations to reduce climate change. I eventually turned out that what I learned from science teacher is just his own belief or trust. At the end, as I was influenced by him, even my view on global warming was narrowed down.
Second, students should be taught well-balanced. As well, teachers should encourage students to learn knowledge in objective way. If teachers explain a certain subject by making stress on his opinion, it definitely loose the balance. For instance, the objectivity is more important for me as a student who is majored in history to know about fact on the subject. Although historians must have their own opinions on historical facts, they have to eliminate their perspective when they are teaching students. This is because most students do not have their viewpoints yet. Adversely, history teachers should ensure students have their insight on history instead of claiming teachers’ asserts.
To conclude, making teachers’ viewpoint known to students is not good since it is easy to narrow students’ sight on the world, and to lose the balance of knowledge. In these regards, I firmly insist teachers should not reveal their personal opinion in the class. (44min. 404words) : |
