Extended family (such as grandparents, cousins, aunts, and uncles) is less important now that it was past.
Traditionally, Korea emphasizes family oriented society due to Confucianism and conservative atmosphere. In this respect, some people argue that extended family, including grandparents, cousins, aunts, and uncles, is very important. However, I disagree with the notion mentioned above because the society has been going through a lot of changes.
To begin with, there are many nuclear families which move to other country. Because of globalization, the volume of the world gets smaller. With this fact, a lot of small sized families emigrate to other countries to get educational or economic benefits. According to the survey conducted by the government, the number of family who move to other nation has increased constantly for 20 years. I’ll give my uncle’s example to demonstrate this. My uncle’s family leaved Korea 10 years ago. His family has lived in the China because my uncle was not able to find any job in Korea 10 years ago. Due to the downturn of Korean economy at that time, he had no choice but the emigration to China. He finally got a job in China and supports his family.
In addition, the preferable job has changed. About 40 years ago, most Korean work in agriculture industry, which most family members worked together. With constant efforts of government to make the nation wealthy, there had made many kinds of industries and jobs such as a service assistant or a factory worker. People no longer pursued being a farmer anymore, and family did not work as a unit for the production of agricultural products like rice. According to the survey conducted by Samsung Economic Research Institute, the portion of first industry in the national economy has decreased and the portion of service industry has increased gradually for 30 years.
