Presently, much discourse has been deliberated on whether a university should invest in sports activities or academic facilities, such as a library. Some people who believe that universities should build more libraries might say that library is essential for good education. However, in my opinion, it is better for universities to spend as much money on sports as they do on libraries. The reasons are that sports promotes students’ physical health and encourage interaction among students.
To begin with, better sports facilities would encourage students to exercise more, therefore, helping students to stay in shape. In fact, nowaday, more students are becoming unhealthy as they are sitting at the dest all day studying really hard. This sedentary lifestyle can lead students to some diseases, such as obesity or high-blood pressure. Here is an example of my cousin. He gained weight a lot after his exams and researches at university. and was diagnosed as the early stage of obesity. He was surprised and joined the school tennis team. After playing tennis every day, he lost a lot weight and became much healthier. He later told me that he felt so much better after joining the team. As shown in this example, universities’ investment in sports actives is essential for students health.
On top of that, sports make students come together and attract more interaction among them. Playing sports often requires a sense of cooperation by woking in a team. By practicing and spending time together, students would be able to expand their social networks and develop their communication skills. A study was conducted by Seoul National University to determine whether playing sports could affect students socialization skills. There were two groups monitored. The first group was formed of people who often played sports and the other group with people who did not. Both teams were put in a social party and asked to make as many friends as possible. The researchers then tracked their habits. The researchers compared the outcomes and recorded that the former group were able to make friends relatively more easily. This was because, students of the former group were equipped with socialization skills that they acquired from sports activities. As they had to communicate and cooperate with their teammates they could easily develop their socializing skillset. As this case reveals, playing sports can promote students’ sociability.
In a nutshell, playing sports can help students to stay healthy and to broaden their social network. In this regard, I firmly believe that investing in sports is as important as libraries for universities. |
