Most people in big cities such as New York have to suffer from stressful problems, ranging from traffic jams to air pollution. As a result, governments in different countries are commonly striving to come up with plausible solutions of the problems. To narrow down the choices into two, investing money on roads and highways or on public transportation might be the solutions. In my opinion, the latter one is more preferable because it is environment-oriented and economical.
By improving public transportation, governments could protect the nature. Advancing roads and highways have no other implications than encouraging people to ride cars more, which increases the emission of CO2. In contrast, when people are enticed from the improvement of public transportation and begin to ride it, it could contribute positively to environment. For example, Korea, especially in Seoul, has started to invest money on nature gas-running buses since 2005. It is both environmental friendly and pollution-free transportation. As a consequence, the whole emission of CO2 in Seoul has been reduced by 20 percent, which has been revealed from the study conducted by Korean Environment Development Department. Hence, it is more beneficial for governments to spend money on develop public transportation.
Moreover, advancing public transportation is much more economical. There is no doubt that governments have to spend huge sums of money to construct roads and develop highways to prevent traffic jams. However, the goal is not rosy since more roads do not necessarily mean the relief of traffic jams. On the other hand, improving public transportation is cost-effective, but it also has a number of benefits. To be more specific, when governments increase the number of buses, lower the cost of subways or enlarge the space of trains, customers might be attracted to the improvements and prefer to ride the public transportation. Then, there would be less cars running in roads and highways, which would eventually relieve the traffic jams. Indeed, governments could solve city problems at the least cost. Therefore, governments should try as much as possible to develop public transportation.
In conclusion, it is more beneficial for governments to advance public transportation when considering environment and efficiency. As a matter of fact, it is necessary these days since it is urgent to protect environment by reducing green house gases. | |
