Those who belive that exposing oneself to as many fields as possible helps one to have a better chance of finding what one's true interest is might say that high school shtudents should not be allowed to choose which subjects they will study. However, in my opinion, permitting them to choose whichever subjects they want to study is better than the school's decision to make subjects requirements on behalf of students. There are two major reasons: to boost their efficiency in study and to develop expertise.
To begin with, when it comes to students' productivity in their study is concerned, there is nothing more critial than giving them a right to choose subjects they desire to learn. In a sense, it might be true there is a possibility that they would choose subjects that seem to be easy to get a good grade on. They are not actually thinking about what they are interested in when choosing the subjects. However, in this case, there is a higher chance for students to start to have an interest in their study because they are more likely to get good grades. Then they are more likely to study hard and end up having true interest in subjects that they chose to learn. On the contrary, students are likely to give up on subjects they are not interested in when the school make a decision for them on requirments since they would not have chance to boost their morale.
Moreover, becoming an expert in a certain field is the essential factors for students to survive in this dog-eat-dog world. Although some people might say that students should expose themselves to a variety fields to broaden their horizon while they are young, being an expert is more important. As society is getting more complex, jobs are more specialized. One futurologist said that walking dictionaries cannot achieve success in thie complicated world. Therefore, the way of leading a better life has changed. It was to learn as much things as possible, however, now it is to become an specialist in a certain field. Unless you become the best in a certain field, you are more likely to stress out due to the competition among peers and therefore, there is less chance for you to lead a happy an successful life.
In conclusion, from boosting students' morale and interest in study and helping them to become an expert in a special field, there is nothing more urgent to give them a right to choose subjects to study freely. Requirement in subjects will only be a burden for all students.
