Higher education should be available only to good students. Agree Disagree |
There are thousands of universities only in the US and hundreds of universities in Korea. It makes me wonder if these are really worth existing. I firmly believe that universities should be available only to well-prepared and good students for several reasons.
First, if everyone goes to universities, that means they are likely to expect higher payment jobs and then it can mislead the students to looking for higher payment jobs than they are really qualified to. For example, in Korea,on one hand, many small-mid size companies are suffering from the lack of work force, especially labor work force. On the other hand, it needs fierce competition to get a job as public officers and researchers in a conglomerate. This is because the students who graduated from univertisties are looking for only white-color positions. As such, If everyone wants to work in the desk, who will do the labor or manual work? I think the problem is getting serious thesedays due to the unnecessay high education. Our society still needs people who clean the streets, wash the dishes, do labor work and so on. To do such jobs, we do not need a lot of abstract knowledge.
Second, most universities are interested in the number of the students, not in the quality of students, That is, their major conern is not quality of research. It seems like they took more interest in how many students they have for their financial reasons. To illustrate, it is easy to see that many universities do not impose a certain kind of strict academic standards to their studetns that can stimulate them to do further study. As a result, many graduated students are not qualified to do their professional career.
Third, unprepared students can compromise the quality of the higher institutions. For example, when I was in university, I was often surpried to see many were poor at math. Even though math itself do not matter a lot, some students revealed his difficulties that they had very hard time to keep up with the lectures. As a result, some students dropped out the classes even some quit the school. The above example lends strong evidence to the idea that availability of university to poorly prepared students does lead to undesirable consequences for both students and universities.
To sum up, the availability of universities to everyone is good for the overall development of our society. However, it is evident that some universities' are only concernd about enlarging their number of students, thus compromising the quality of education. Considering all these reasons, we need to look into the reality of universities and then ponder over the fact that how much they need to be learned and how many students are properly qualified to do their study. In addition, we should think how much social energy we are wasting to educate students who neither interested in academic subjects, nor have any talent in them. |
