Some people assert that educators should be forbidden to reveal their social or political stances in class. However, I strongly believe that teachers should teach not only academic knowledge but valuable lessons for students. First reason lesson I want to assert is getting a the broad perspective. Second is about debate skills.
To begin with, teachers can help students broaden their horizons toward the world. To take a personal example, when I was in high school, I participated in a humanitarian mission in Africa during summer vacation. Indeed, I was almost shocked that a substantial number of people were suffering from starvation and diseases. Health care system was poorly developed. Children could not have had little or no access to education because they were forced to work to make a living. I could not understand why these innocent people had to live in such terrible environments. I read some books and searched the Internet for newspaper articles about Africa. Views varied according to the authors' perspectives. All the conflicting viewpoints made me really confused and I could not conclude anything. However, my history teacher introduced various arguments about the problem and asserted that past colonization of European countries was mainly responsible for African problem. Thanks to his professional and friendly explanation, I could get a better understanding about the continent and broaden my horizons in historical and social aspects.

On top of that, by showing his/her social or political opinions, teacher can help students to develop debate skills. This is especially useful when a teacher use discussion-centered teaching method. For instance, my social teacher allocated certain classes on discussion. First, she showed her political view against the government. Then she encouraged us to refute with reasonable explanations. It really helped us learn about how to express or insist our opinion logically.

To conclude, I disagree with the assertion that teachers should not show their personal views about social or political issues because it can teach students to develop their discussion skills and widen their perspectives toward the society. If the role of the teacher is only limited to teaching academic knowledge or practical skills, students would hardly have time to develop their thinking ability and become just-studying machines. |
