Some people think
that learners should be assigned daily homework. However, in my opinion, it is
better to not give assignments to students every day because they do not have
educational benefits and hinder students from pursuing other activities.
To begin with, giving homework to students every day does
not lead to higher academic performance. This is because forcing work on students
can hinder their development of motivation to study. In other words, they will
continue to struggle to study independently, leading to poor performance in the
long term. A supporting evidence comes from a recent report by the Education department
of the University of Nottingham. The researchers found that students from a secondary
school which gives homework occasionally to students scored better on average
in tests than those from another school which does every day. This plainly highlights
how daily homework assignment can have an adverse effect on studies, if not
none.
Furthermore, daily
homework deters students from engaging in other pursuits. It is important for
students to be able to do extracurricular activities because they help them
find out their interests and talents, which will affect their career choice.
For example, my friend used to attend a prestigious private school and she was
snowed under with piles of homework every day. She was unhappy with her dull
life in which she was required to study like a machine. However, she
transferred to a different school where she was given more spare time, which she
used to learn to play the piano. As a result, she became avidly interested in playing
the piano and chose it as her major when she entered university. If she stayed
at her previous school, she would have never discovered this career path.
To sum up, daily
homework has no educational values and deprives freedom of students to do
leisure activities. In this regard, I do not agree that students should be
given daily assignment.
