There are two
styles of classes, one is where only teachers talk and the other one is where
all members of the class participate. I believe
that class that encourages encouraging students to participate has more benefits than
classes where students only take notes. I feel this way for two main reasons
which I will explore in the following essay.
First of all,
students can develop abstract thinking process. In other words, students learn
to think broadly and creatively when they are allowed to actively participate
in class. My own example of taking internal medicine of small animals is a
compelling example of this. In each class, we had to diagnose and plan
treatment for patients for ourselves. Professor would tell us basic information
about patients, such as her age, sex, and what the symptoms are, etc. Then as a
group, we made our own treatment plan. We discussed about diseases we can rule
out from the patient’s symptoms and what procedures we should execute to
accurately diagnose the problem, and what our treatment should be. We had to recall all we I had learned in and out of class to find the best way. Going
through this class, I learned to think holistically to find the best way to

Secondly,
students can learn from peers. As more students participate in the class, they can
learn more knowledge and thoughts from them. To be more specific, in aforementioned
class of small animal medicine, I was able to learn learned concepts I had totally
forgotten or thing I would have neglected from my colleagues. For example, when
given patient was a feline, I was baffled since I never had cats in my at home, I
knew little about them. Friends who were living lived with cats gave us small details
about them which I did not learn from the class.
In
conclusion, I think participating in class is better than just note taking
because students can start thinking broadly, and because students can learn
