Some people think that living as a extended family is still substantial. However, in my opinion, I think since each family members’ economical lifestyle has changed and to make fast decision, living as a nuclear family is also good option.
To begin with, people has moved from family oriented businesses to work individually. In the past, many family lived together to engage in family business such as farming for living. However, in modern society, most members of family has different job rather than engaging in family business. For example, I was living in my father’s house about 5 months after I got married. My mother was working as a artist who was able to work in home, and my father had his office 10 minutes away from our home. Since our home was in suburb, my husband and I had to commute to Seoul to work and it took two hours every day. Sometimes, I had to do a team project until late night, it made exhausted to go and back between two places. It was good to live all together but due to our jobs, it turned out to be quite difficult considering each members’ job.
On top of that, living as a nuclear family can set decision quickly. Since not many people are living together, it is easy to do some tasks done faster. For instance, one of my friend was living in a large family in the past. If her family plans to go for a trip, it takes about two months to schedule everything done. Even planning simple thing such as booking hotel for the trip, because her great grandmother, parents in law and her children has different opinion, she is always busy to draw the middle point. Comparing to my another friend who is living in a small family, when they plan to travel, they plan fast. Because they have only three members in their family, it is easier to compromise with one another’s opinion than a huge family.
To sum up, considering contemporary life style has changed and decision making is quicker within family members as living in nuclear family. In this regard, I think significance of living as large family is decreasing. |
