▶ Your Answer :
Given reading explains three possible
explanations about sudden demise of Angkor. However, professor disagrees with
those theories with her own reasons.
First, according to the professor, the
theory based on the plague cannot explain the civilization's disappearance.
This is supported by the fact that the epidemic was spreaded by the coastal
trade and in a result, affected many coastal cities. For the case of Angkor,
the inland city, this idea cannot be applicable.
Also she disputes the idea of water system,
because the examined water system was always not sufficient to offer water to
its whole population. With this evidence, she argues that this lack of water
cannot led the city to its fall, since it was natural to not have a water for
other 50% of its population.
Finally, the professor says that the
maritime trade mentioned in the passage cannot be a reason of sudden end of the
civilization. This is because that the civilization mostly depended on their
agricultural trade, not a marine product. Indeed, the city also could maintain
their economical influence even after the rise of those coastal cities due to
their luxurious goods.
